My Head Would Either Crack Or Warp Until I Upgraded My Coolant…

Richie-Arber-300px.jpgMy NZGT Evo 7 has had an on-going issue of over-heating, regularly seeing temperatures above 100deg Celsius, and I spent a lot of time and money trying to solve the problem by adding a larger radiator, bigger fans, using different water additives, adding expansion tanks, increasing the system pressure by using a high pressure cap (25psi) and increasing the water capacity by adding another tank, all of which were a waste of time and money as the problem was still there in some form or another. This route saw a couple of expensive race heads get hot spots on them and eventually they would just not cope and the head would either crack or warp due to the hot spots created by water boiling in the head.

Then a friend suggested Liquid Intelligence 115 Super Waterless Coolant so I looked on the website and thought the claims on there were too good to be true so I went to visit Roy King and told him my problem. After Roy explained how water reacts in a cooling system and how these hot spots come about it was clear to see that water, with no matter what additive you add, will just not give your engine the protection it deserves and at some stage it will have a problem caused by the heat the engine generates or indeed by the high pressure that some people, including myself at one stage, are running.

I got rid of all of the extra bits I had added, put a low pressure (14psi) radiator cap on then filled the system with Liquid Intelligence 115 as per Roy’s directions and went racing. The car, in open air, stayed at a steady 78-80deg Celsius and in heavy traffic (following another car or cars closely for a few laps) the max temperature the car reached was 87deg Celsius, to say I was happy was an understatement. With the car parked back in the pit garages directly after racing, with no air going through the radiator, the temperature stayed between 83 – 88deg, cycling on and off the fan, you could actually feel the heat being drawn out of the engine by this product and because it does not boil and create pressure you can actually take the radiator cap off and see the liquid doing its job.

I would not hesitate to recommend Liquid Intelligence 115 Super Waterless Coolant to anyone that wants to look after their engine, no matter what the application.

Boiling Point Is Not What You Think It Is!

Under normal conditions a vintage or classic engine generally runs around 80°C / 176°F but not up hills on a hot day or stop start in city traffic.

When a vintage engine is operating continually above its normal running temperature, the coolants heat quenching process (nucleate boiling) is reduced or stoped. The coolant itself is kept away from the hot metal surface of the engines internal water jacket by a layer of vapour called a ‘vapour blanket’. When vapour blanketing occurs, the hot metal surface becomes insulated from the surrounding liquid coolant, thus significantly elevating the engine temperature. After this happens the temperature gauge will have gone past normal and will be heading towards the red. Whilst the cooling system may not have reached full boil it is compromised and is no longer operating effectively.

When this happens pulling over to the side of the road and waiting for the engine to cool down is usually your only option.

If You Are Using Water In Your Cooling System….. This Is Your Real Boiling Point.

Fact: In a no or low pressure vintage or classic cooling system water has a boiling point of 100°C / 212°F.

However…

Whilst the boiling point of water is 100°C /212°F in a no pressure vintage cooling system, the vapour blanketing will start to occur at around 90°C. After which the cooling system is no longer operating effectively. And the engine temperature will continue to rise until it reaches full boil.

 

If You Are Using 50/50 Water and Glycol Coolant In Your Cooling System….. This Is Your Real Boiling Point.

Fact: In a no or low pressure vintage or classic car cooling system 50/50 water and glycol has a boiling point of 104°C / 218°F.

However…

Whilst the boiling point of 50/50 water and glycol is 104°C in a no or low pressure vintage cooling system, the vapour blanketing will start to occur at around 95°C. After which the cooling system is no longer operating effectively. And the engine temperature will continue to rise until it reaches full boil.

What is the boiling point of coolant?
The boiling point of a coolant is the temperature at which the vapour pressure of the liquid equals the environmental pressure surrounding the liquid.

In other words, the boiling point of a coolants varies depending on the surrounding environmental pressure. Different coolants (at a given pressure) boil at different temperatures. Also the boiling point is when the coolant is at full boil and pumping out of the radiator.

We are running mesh screen on our ATV 800s to keep grass seeds from blocking the radiators. However the screens still get blocked causing reduced air flow through the radiators. “This is our (Liquid Intelligence) definition of the term waterless coolant as opposed to a non-aqueous coolant.”

The term “waterless” would normally imply that this product contains no water. However the glycol base of Liquid Intelligence 115 has been saturated with heat dissipating compounds, and a small amount of ®DD-Water (water that has been processed using a proprietary treatment). The ®DD-Water is only present as a bonded mixture of the heat dissipating compounds and not as free water. And as such this product can be described as a waterless coolant, but it cannot be classified as a non-aqueous coolant.
